THIS YEAR’S TOP TIPS FOR SKIING AT HALF TERM
When it comes to a family ski holiday, the children’s school holiday will most likely decide when you get to make the trip out. For many, this will be one of the middle weeks of February for half-term because although you could go out in December, the days are shorter and at Easter you might just risk slushy afternoons depending on snowfall. If this is your only opening to get away with the children, here are some top tips for making it as seamless and stress free, for this busy time of year.
Book your accommodation as early as possible
Accommodation starts to get booked up as soon as people return from their February break. This is because there are often deals on regarding lift passes or because they want to ensure the chalet or hotel that suits their family make-up is guaranteed.
Ski Hire: Chalet or shop fit?
Booking ski hire for the whole family and group in advance is very important. Depending on when you arrive at resort, you want to make sure you have a ski hire fit booked in, so you are getting the most out of your 6-day trip. Chalet fit is perfect for the later arrivals or early morning fit, while a shop fit could be the best option if you arrive in the middle of the day and have time before check-in is ready.
Ski School and Childcare Options
It might sound obvious but the earlier you book ski lessons the better. Instructors get booked up quick and in order to have a tailored and flexible programme you want to get in first with requests.
Avoid the rush at lunchtime
If you can avoid it, do not take lunch at 12pm to 2pm. This is prime group lessons lunch slot. Take lunch early or fill your jackets with snacks for the kids and keep them skiing until the busy slot is over. This way you can enjoy lunch with less queues in the restaurants and take advantage of small queues at the lifts while everyone else is at lunch.
Booking in advance is important for restaurants, especially if you are a big group. Take recommendations from the concierge team ahead of your stay to avoid missing out on group bookings.
First lift is the best lift
You won’t be sorry about getting up and out on first lifts! Pack snacks and sort the kids ski wear the night before and get yourself up and out for the first lift opening. This will start your day stress free and the beauty of seeing empty runs and making those special first tracks can only put a smile on your face.
Check out the piste map
Take some time to look over the piste map ahead of a days skiing. Map your route and try keep to outer edge runs rather than just hitting the central ones that everyone else will be on!
Book a guide
Even if you’ve been skiing for years, a guide can show you around on your first morning and give you some insider tips to quieter runs!
