Val d’Isere Offers More Than the Perfect Chalet

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Anyone wanting the perfect chalet accommodation, Val d’Isere is the only place that should be in mind.  With a variety of high end and luxurious options, families, couples and friends can find the perfect chalets in Val d’Isere for their needs.  However, being one of France’s top skiing locations, Val d’Isere offers far more than luxury chalets.

Being one of the high altitude resorts, the skiing is fantastic and is the number one attraction for visitors.  For those with a short schedule it is not unusual to see guests dumping their bags and running to the slopes because, with a range of fantastic pistes and off-piste routes, there is a huge variety to keep winter sports enthusiasts happy.  Meanwhile, with a great number of pros in the area, taking a few lessons is a great way to spend a morning or so.

In addition to skiing and top accommodation, Val d’Isere offers great sightseeing and social attractions.  The Alps are stunning and even those on the thrilling ride downhill should take time to look across the panoramic views.  There are also great dining opportunities and trying fondue and raclette is a must.  For those who want to party whilst they are in the Savoie region, Petit Danois, Dick’s Tea Bar, Pacific and Face are ideal locations to drink, dance and have a good night out.

With skiing in Val d’Isere the number one attraction it can be easy to forget that there is so much more to do.  For travellers wanting a little bit of everything on top of great accommodation, Val d’Isere is the place to go.

Cross Country Skiing in Val d’Isere

Monday, August 8th, 2011

The peace of cross-country (also called Nordic) skiing in Val D’isere is ideal for anybody who loves tranquility, or feels that the downhill pistes at the resort are too packed or too high. It is an excellent type of aerobic fitness exercise as you are able to be as energetic as you like, whilst the calm pace causes it to be a far more relaxing method to enjoy Val D’isere’s beautiful surroundings.

Return to nature and investigate by relaxing in the cross-country paths around Val D’isere at your own speed. There are two diverse methods – traditional and skating. Traditional is the least difficult for novices; you just put your skis into two parallel groves, drive off and float round the paths. Skating tends to be much livelier and more difficult to understand requiring more ability; you drive both feet out to each side as if you are skating on ice and use your poles at the same time to achieve momentum.

You are able to hire the comfy footwear and light-weight skis and also poles relatively cheaply from the majority of sports stores in the area as well as arrange a group or personal lesson to understand the basic principles from the majority of Val D’isere skiing schools or personal teachers. For all those accustomed to downhill skis, in the beginning you feel hazardously balanced and downhill parts are much more thrilling on slim skis without any sides! The skis tend to be lighter in weight and also thinner compared to skis used for downhill skiing, and the footwear tends to be softer and more comfy.

If you would like to try some cross country skiing whilst staying with Le Chardon Mountain Lodges this coming ski season, let us know in advance and we will organise the lessons, equipment and can even provide a gourmet picnic lunch, which you will need as this is an active if peaceful way to enjoy skiing in Val d’Isere.

New Year in Val d’isere – simply unique

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

For a fairly small but perfectly formed alpine village, Val d’Isere certainly packs a lot of punches.  Frequently hailed as the world’s top ski destination, it is also in the top ten for a vibrant après-ski scene.   As one of the top nightlife hotspots over the winter season, it’s easy to party away - night after night.  However, if you prefer a more relaxed ambience, away from the throngs, Val is the place to be too!  Doesn’t make sense?  What makes Val so special is that it has so many different facets.  You can capture that unique alpine charm with your loved ones in a cosy Savoyard chalet, toasting in the New Year, or enjoy a wild New Year’s party in one of the well-frequented bars in the resort.

Val d’Isere’s end-of-year celebrations also feature a Christmas market and village, giant snow sculptures, children’s shows, horse-drawn sleigh and a visit from Father Christmas himself.  For children, there are endless activities to choose from.  Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 5pm, they can ‘airboard’ – a snow bodyboard that gives the sensation of flying above the snow;  Snake Gliss -  a “snow snake” sleigh for up to 20 people (minimum age 7); or play 5-a-side snow football.  This all takes place in the Solaise area.

Every Thursday from 6pm to 7.30pm, the centre of Val d’Isère becomes a wonderland of street entertainments, including ice and snow sculpting, parades, music and fireworks. The village is lit up with beautiful multicoloured illuminations, a truly magical sight. There are always lots of things going on to keep the children entertained.

Of course, you can’t mention Val d’Isere without mentioning skiing.  The Espace Killy ski area is generally regarded as one of the best in the world. Together with Tignes, the lifts take you to some of the highest runs in Europe.   With a snow record better than most other resorts you can be sure of good conditions on and off piste for the whole season.

One great advantage for beginners when choosing where to go is that Val d’Isere’s nursery slopes, both in the resort centre and at La Daille, are completely free!
