5 top tips for first-time skiers

Welcome to 2013 and a very Happy New year to everyone from Le Chardon Mountain Lodges.

With the festivities over now is the perfect time to think of a new challenge for 2013.  Why not try Skiing?  It’s a very sociable sport and the basics can be picked up quickly.

If this appeals,  follow these tips and, even if you’ve never tried skiing before, you’ll have a fantastic time on the slopes this season.

#1 – get fit to ski?

Skiing, like any sport, is a fantastic way to get fit. But if you hit the slopes for the first time (even the novice slopes), without doing a little preparation, you’re going to spend every other day nursing sore stiff muscles when you could be out there having fun and improving your skills!

So before you head to the Val d’Isere powder-perfect slopes, spend a little time in the gym strengthening leg muscles in particular.

Skiing is all about letting the skis do the work, but you need to have a certain amount of flexibility and strength to be able to cope with a hard day’s exercise! We particularly love yoga here in Val d’Isere as we’ve found that it’s a huge help with improving flexibility and balance – two key elements in skiing. Plus it’s a great way to unwind at the end of a busy day on the slopes!

#2 – Acclimatise

Some people suffer quite badly from what is known as ‘altitude sickness’ when they come to Val d’Isere, particularly if you suffer from any respiratory conditions, e.g., asthma. If you do need regular inhalers then it’s essential that you use them and at the first sign of light-headedness or nausea ski down to a lower slope.

#3 – don’t underestimate the cold

The temperature here in Val d’Isere can drop pretty low, so make sure you have plenty of warm clothing with you. Don’t be fooled by our brilliant mountain sunshine either – even on a cloudless day with the sun shining the temperature can drop dramatically. Pay particular attention to your extremities (hands, feet and head).

Helmets help here, not only by protecting your head in a fall, but but also by keeping it covered and warm.

#4 – Pick the right boots and skis

This can be a bit of a minefield if you’ve never been skiing before, so in Val d’Isere our ski suppliers will go through the process with you so that you get exactly the right equipment. Your skis should be 30cm shorter than your height, and boots should be snug, but not too tight. Rather than buying an expensive set of skis, why not hire some for your first trip out to the slopes? If you find you are hooked (and we’re pretty sure you will!) then you can invest in a good set of skis and boots for your next ski trip.

#5 – gently does it…

Don’t overdo your first day. Skiing is a physically demanding exercise and you’ll be using muscles you don’t normally, so expect some aches and pains the next day. (We recommend a massage or hot tub soak each day – wonderful ways to relax those tired muscles). Set a pace you feel comfortable with – and don’t forget the sun-block either; the sun combined with the glare from the snow can burn your nose quicker than lying on a Caribbean beach for hours!

Skiing is such a sociable sport to take part in, master the snowplough and you will be step turning and moving on to the more challenging slopes before your week’s ski holiday is through. Many novice guests have reported skiing with the majority of their group by the end of their first week due to Val’s range of long and wide blue and green slopes which make them fun for the more experienced skiers yet great for building confidence amongst learners.

Happy New Year from Val d’Isere

The festivities over Christmas and New Year have been as exuberant as ever, with a great party atmosphere amidst all the revellers at the roundabout! Of course, whilst in other places there’s a bit of an anticlimax after the holiday season, in the top ski resorts it just gets busier and busier from now on.

If you’ve been over-indulging and are thinking of going skiing soon, try and build up your fitness well beforehand – don’t leave it too late. I’ve been told that wobble boards are great for muscle tone and stamina, not tried one myself so would be interested to hear your feedback if you’ve tried one. I’ve got plenty of wobble without needing a board thank you very much!

Piste conditions are excellent just now, with more snow due in the next few days. Off-piste conditions are variable – please exercise caution, avalanche safety devices are not always infallible. The recent tragedy just before Christmas has made us all sadly aware of the unpredictability of some of the terrain.

Remember that there are lots of things to do in Val d’Isere other than skiing, it really is a great all-round holiday spot – one of the ‘in’ activities at the moment is ‘Yoga with Altitude’ – great name!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010 FROM VAL D’ISERE

Val d’Isere has enjoyed an action-packed start to the season, with the Criterium de la Premiere Neige tournament just before Christmas, and the Army Ski Championships last week.  Of course, one of the highlights for countless visitors at this time of year is the New Year celebrations.

Whilst the weather hadn’t been behaving in the last few days of 2009, on New Year’s Eve itself the sky was clear with a beautiful full moon.  The slopes were bathed in brilliant moonlight, whilst hundreds of sky lanterns and searchlights shining on Le Face added more magic to the scene.  Hosts of revellers gathered at the roundabout for the countdown to the bells, and at the last stroke there was of course general mayhem and good cheer with some very loud bangers to mark the occasion.

On New Year’s Day all the resort’s 150 ski instructors gathered together to put on a wonderful ‘Snow Show 2010’ which featured music and live entertainment, a  torchlit descent down Le Face, and a spectacular fireworks display, not forgetting the ready supplies of mulled wine to keep the party atmosphere going.

An extra-special addition to the resort this year is the new Sports and Leisure Centre, which only opened on 20th December.  Boasting  a huge swimming pool, spa area, climbing wall, squash courts and gym, this is one of the biggest investments Val d’Isere has every made as a resort, and a great place to go if skiing conditions are not perfect or you fancy a change of scene.
There has been lots of new snow in the past few days and we’ve had some amazingly clear blue skies, perfect skiing conditions.  Off-piste is fantastic at the moment too, but make sure you arrange to go with an experienced guide and check for avalanche warnings before you set off.

New Year in Val d’isere – simply unique

For a fairly small but perfectly formed alpine village, Val d’Isere certainly packs a lot of punches.  Frequently hailed as the world’s top ski destination, it is also in the top ten for a vibrant après-ski scene.   As one of the top nightlife hotspots over the winter season, it’s easy to party away - night after night.  However, if you prefer a more relaxed ambience, away from the throngs, Val is the place to be too!  Doesn’t make sense?  What makes Val so special is that it has so many different facets.  You can capture that unique alpine charm with your loved ones in a cosy Savoyard chalet, toasting in the New Year, or enjoy a wild New Year’s party in one of the well-frequented bars in the resort.

Val d’Isere’s end-of-year celebrations also feature a Christmas market and village, giant snow sculptures, children’s shows, horse-drawn sleigh and a visit from Father Christmas himself.  For children, there are endless activities to choose from.  Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 5pm, they can ‘airboard’ – a snow bodyboard that gives the sensation of flying above the snow;  Snake Gliss -  a “snow snake” sleigh for up to 20 people (minimum age 7); or play 5-a-side snow football.  This all takes place in the Solaise area.

Every Thursday from 6pm to 7.30pm, the centre of Val d’Isère becomes a wonderland of street entertainments, including ice and snow sculpting, parades, music and fireworks. The village is lit up with beautiful multicoloured illuminations, a truly magical sight. There are always lots of things going on to keep the children entertained.

Of course, you can’t mention Val d’Isere without mentioning skiing.  The Espace Killy ski area is generally regarded as one of the best in the world. Together with Tignes, the lifts take you to some of the highest runs in Europe.   With a snow record better than most other resorts you can be sure of good conditions on and off piste for the whole season.

One great advantage for beginners when choosing where to go is that Val d’Isere’s nursery slopes, both in the resort centre and at La Daille, are completely free!
